Getting to Hangzhou

By Air

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) serves as the main gateway to Hangzhou, with direct flights from major cities in Asia and connecting flights from around the world.

International Connections

  • Direct flights from Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok, and other Asian cities
  • Connecting flights via Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Hong Kong for travelers from Europe, North America, and Australia

From the Airport to the City

  • Airport Express Bus: Multiple routes to downtown areas (¥20, approx. 60 minutes)
  • Taxi: Available outside the arrival hall (¥120-150, approx. 30-45 minutes)
  • Metro: Line 1 connects the airport to the city center (¥8, approx. 50 minutes)

By Train

Hangzhou is a major railway hub with excellent high-speed train connections to many cities in China.

High-Speed Rail Connections

  • Shanghai to Hangzhou: 45-60 minutes
  • Beijing to Hangzhou: 4.5-5.5 hours
  • Guangzhou to Hangzhou: 7-8 hours
  • Nanjing to Hangzhou: 1.5 hours
  • Suzhou to Hangzhou: 1.5 hours

Train Stations

  • Hangzhou East Railway Station: Main station for high-speed trains, connected to Metro Line 1 and Line 4
  • Hangzhou Railway Station: Serves both high-speed and regular trains, connected to Metro Line 1 and Line 3
  • Hangzhou South Railway Station: Smaller station serving regional routes

By Bus

Long-distance buses connect Hangzhou with nearby cities and provinces.

Bus Terminals

  • Hangzhou West Bus Terminal: Major terminal with routes to cities in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces
  • Hangzhou South Bus Terminal: Serves routes to southern Zhejiang and neighboring provinces
  • Hangzhou East Bus Terminal: Located near Hangzhou East Railway Station, convenient for transfers

Getting Around Hangzhou

Metro

Hangzhou's modern metro system is an efficient way to travel around the city. Currently, there are multiple lines in operation covering major areas of the city.

  • Operating hours: 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Fare: ¥2-8 depending on distance
  • Hangzhou Metro App available for route planning
  • Announcements in Chinese and English

Useful Lines for Conference

  • Line 1: Connects Hangzhou East Railway Station to the city center
  • Line 2: Serves the West Lake area and downtown
  • Line 4: Connects to Hangzhou International Expo Center

Bus

Hangzhou has an extensive bus network covering areas not served by the metro. Buses are an economical option for getting around the city.

Key Information

  • Fare: ¥2-5 depending on the route
  • Hangzhou Transportation Card can be used for discounted fares
  • Bus stops have route maps in Chinese and English
  • Major routes operate from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM

Tourist Bus Routes

  • Y1: West Lake scenic loop
  • Y2: Cultural heritage sites
  • Y3: Xixi Wetland and tea plantation areas

Taxi and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are readily available in Hangzhou and provide a convenient way to reach specific destinations.

Taxis

  • Base fare: ¥11 for the first 3 km
  • Additional: ¥2.5 per km after first 3 km
  • Night surcharge (11 PM - 5 AM): 30% extra
  • Most taxis accept cash only
  • Have your destination written in Chinese if possible

Ride-Hailing

  • Didi is the main ride-hailing app in China
  • English version available
  • Accepts international credit cards
  • Typically 10-20% cheaper than regular taxis

Bicycle

Hangzhou is known for its extensive public bicycle system and bike-friendly infrastructure, making cycling a pleasant way to explore the city, especially around West Lake.

Public Bike Sharing

  • Thousands of stations throughout the city
  • Requires temporary subscription (available at service centers)
  • First hour free, then ¥1-3 per hour
  • Deposit: ¥200 (refundable)

Private Bike Rental

  • Available near West Lake and tourist areas
  • Cost: ¥20-40 per day
  • ID or passport required for rental
  • Helmets usually available upon request
